Welcome to the Neston Borough Building Control Plans Database 1868-1950

From 1858 local authorities had powers to make bye-laws to control new buildings and by the 1870s it was acknowledged that such regulations were essential. Local councils started to keep registers of all proposed new buildings including alterations, together with plans.

It is Archive service policy to weed building control plans in the following way: pre 1920: retain all plans (plans become more routine after this date) 1920-1947: retain all plans of complete, permanent buildings 1948-1974: retain as above including all developments of 3 or more dwellings and all plans of listed buildings or otherwise notable buildings.

The surviving plans from Neston Borough cover 1868-1950 and have been categorised as: Education and Worship, Agricultural, Industrial Premises, Hospitals and Ancillary Establishments, Places of Entertainment and Recreation, Public Houses, Residential, Retail and Banking Business Premises. Places covered are: Burton, Hinderton, Leighton, Little Neston, Ness, Ness Holt, Neston, Parkgate and Willaston.

Where it is given on the plan the database contains: date, house number and street, description, architect and client.

These plans are available for research in the Record Office. Some of the early plans are very fragile and will need repair before they can be used or copied. Please consult staff about availability.
